Dr. Mark Kuhlberg is a leading expert on the history of Canada’s forests. The twenty seasons that he spent in the tree-planting industry informs his understanding of this subject. The practical knowledge he gained in the bush has proven invaluable to his research into the history of human interaction with our woodlands, specifically in the realms of government-industry relations, forestry education, the use of chemicals to combat forest pests, and early silvicultural projects. He has also acted as the expert historical researcher on a number of successful First Nation timber and flooding claims and legal cases involving several modern-day forestry and environmental issues, and he remains actively engaged in contemporary forestry and First Nations issues. In the classroom, he aims to teach students that history has enormous value in our world if one is able to demonstrate the relevance of our knowledge of the past and the skills that we develop in exploring it.
