Laboratory Technologist, School of Natural Sciences

Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Architecture, the successful candidate will be responsible for organizing and delivering weekly laboratory sessions for assigned biology courses. Key responsibilities include ensuring that students conduct experiments safely, managing class lists, recruiting and coordinating the work of teaching assistants, overseeing the grading of lab reports, and entering grades into Desire2Learn. The role also involves collaborating with faculty members in the creation and revision of lab experiments. Additionally, the candidate must adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations, and the University’s Health and Safety Policies.
- Set up lab experiments weekly, according to lab manual specifications, for assigned laboratory sections for biology courses;
- Prepare new lab experiments and descriptions, or revise current ones, in consultation with a department faculty member;
- Set up class lists for all labs session; record students' marks and place them into Desire 2 Learn (D2L) for students to read; interpret, understand and apply policies with respect to students, faculty; handle sensitive and confidential information; generate reports;
- Maintain lab-related software programs and associated equipment;
- Assist with equipment and equipment documentation inventory and control;
- Arrange for and supervise use of the necessary safety equipment or procedures in laboratories
- Consult with students about laboratory experiments or reports;
- Oversee report marking and review and enter lab marks records;
- Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, as well as the University's Health and Safety Policies;
- Keep labs up to date for safety, obtaining the most recent and accurate information to ensure labs are run effectively and safely.
- Be responsible for a Groupwise account, personal LUNET page (maintaining, protecting, controlling access); and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- BSc in Biology, or closely related discipline (MSc is an asset);
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a similar role;
- Advanced knowledge of computer software (Groupwise, Datatel, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, MS Project); Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, public relations and administration skills;
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, work under occasional pressure to meet deadlines while contending with multiple distractions;
- Motivated, with excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently under minimal supervision;?
- Driver license Level G license; and
- Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.
The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.?
