Laboratory Technician, School of Speech-Language Pathology

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the dean of the Faculty of Education and Health, the incumbent will manage the School of Speech-Language Pathology laboratory and material library, and will develop and carry out experiential learning activities for B.Sc.S. (Orthophonie) students.

  • Maintain, organize, disinfect and ensure the working order of equipment in the Speech and Language Clinic laboratory and material library;
  • Act as liaison with the specialist equipment supplier (Pentax) and our IT services to ensure regular and appropriate updates;
  • Keep an inventory of all laboratory supplies and equipment;
  • Maintain an inventory of all supplies in the speech and language material library (assessment tools and intervention materials used in courses and placements in the Clinic);
  • Administer the material library borrowing system;
  • Develop and implement an experiential learning curriculum for B.Sc. (Orthophonie) students;
  • Supervise, provide demonstrations and support students performing mandatory coursework in the laboratory;
  • Provide feedback to faculty on the skill level of students participating in experiential learning activities;
  • Participate as the lab representative in monthly School of Speech-Language Pathology meetings;
  • Perform other duties directly related to this position, as required; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and Master of Speech-Language Pathology (Orthophonie);
  • Member in good standing of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO);
  • Five years of relevant clinical experience;
  • Knowledge of fieldwork practices and standards set out by the CASLPO and SAC;
  • Relevant office administration experience in a postsecondary setting;
  • Ability to work fluently at a professional level, verbally and in writing, in both official languages (French-English);
  • Excellent writing skills in both official languages to provide the necessary support to the Clinic, its members, students, etc.;
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Workspace and database manipulation;
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with faculty members, clinicians and students with specific requirements;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, work under pressure, and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent organization and initiative;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Understanding of clinical simulation and debriefing, an asset;
  • Postsecondary teaching experience, an asset; and
  • Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, required.

Official University hours of operation are from 9:00?a.m. to 4:30?p.m., Monday through Friday, during and including September to April, and from 8:30?a.m. to 4:00?p.m., Monday through Friday, during and including May to August, amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
