Structures 1 : Wood
This course provides a comprehensive overview of wood from forest to framing and beyond. It introduces the species from the boreal forest to forestry stewardship, and the Forest Stewardship Council standards for wood products. The concepts of timber, lumber, and bent-wood are examined. The architectural principles of wood are studied: bending moment, shear, compression and tension. Wooden buildings from ancient cultures are used as case studies, along with modern wood technologies, such as balloon frame and cross-laminated timber. (lec, lab, sem and site visits), cr 3 (in Technology stream)(taught mornings).
